Leander H. Sabel, Sr. of W3845 Evergreen Court in St. Peter passed away at the Hospice of Good Hope on Sunday, February 26, 2006, at the age of 89.

Leander was born in the Town of Marshfield on April 19, 1916, a son of Edward and Elizabeth (Schaefer) Sabel. On May 7, 1940, he married Germaine Birschbach at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Mount Calvary WI.

Leander and Germaine were engaged in farming all their lives, retiring in 1978. He was a member of the Holy Family Parish. He was a former member of Town of Taycheedah Planning Board and the Town of Empire School Board. Leander enjoyed bowling, playing Sheepshead, and spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by three sons; Lee (Jeanne) Sabel, Kenneth Sabel both of St. Peter; Brian (Colleen) Sabel of Fond du Lac; two daughters, Joyce (Dick) Pikart, Kathy (Paul) Holsen both of Fond du Lac, ten grandchildren; Wendy (Patrick) Miller,Tammy (Michael) Derynda,Heidi (Todd) Fendos,Jodi (Darwin) Will, Traci (Jeff) Borgen, Shannon (Anthony) Truss, Kori Schneider, Quin (Michele) Schneider, Megan and Amanda Sabel; fifteen great-grandchildren; three sisters, Bernetta Schmitz of Fond du Lac; Elfrieda Schmitz of Mount Calvary, and Julitta Bertram of St. Peter; very special friend, Gladys Birschbach of Fond du Lac, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Leander is preceded in death by his wife of forty-four years, Germaine, on November 13, 1984; his father and mother-in-law, Simon and Rose Birschbach of Fond du Lac; three brothers-in-law, Clarence H. Schmitz, Henry Bertram, Clarence J. Schmitz.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 3, 2006,at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Church St. Peter, in the Village of St. Peter. The Reverend Dennis Budka will preside. Entombment will follow at the Shrine of Rest Mausoleum in Ledgeview Memorial Park.

Visitation will be held on March 2, 2006, at the funeral home from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., and also at the funeral home on Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hospice of Hope Program in his name.
