William M. Murphy, son of Daniel F. Murphy and Elizabeth Roche, was born at Dubuque on April 11, 1869, and died at his home in Ida Grove on Thursday, September 4, 1958. He attained the age of 89 years, four months and 24 days. He moved with his parents to Sioux City in 1880 and spent his early manhood there, coming to Ida Grove in 1895. On November 20, 1900, he was united in marriage to Barbara Brechwald and they lived their entire married life in Ida Grove. Six children were born to them, all of whom survive with his widow Mrs. Barbara Murphy. They are Bernard J. Murphy, Theodore E. Murphy, John W. Murphy (June 21, 1904-December 8, 1993, burial unknown), Desmond P. Murphy, Francis A. Murphy and Agnes A. Murphy. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and five great grandchildren; one brother Ray Murphy and one sister, Mrs. May (John M.) Shea. During his residence in Ida Grove he with his father and two brothers operated a blacksmith and machine shop. When automobiles began to arrive as a means of transportation he started a repair shop in connection with the blacksmith shop. He continued in the automobile repair work until he retired from active business. Burial was in the Catholic cemetery. His son John William Murphy was born 21 Jun 1904 and died 8 Dec 1993 at Farmington Hills, Michigan, burial unknown.
