Mrs. Mary A. (Murphy) Shea, 82, former resident of Sioux City and Ida Grove died Sunday, July 24, 1960 at the home of her daughter, Mary (Shea) Deeg of Spring Valley, Ohio.
Mary Alberta Murphy was the only daughter of Daniel and Catherine Murphy, the sixth child or nine. She had eight brothers.
John Michael Shea, age 29, son of Dennis and Nora (Burke) Shea married Mary Alberta Murphy, age 25, daughter of Daniel and Catherine (Roche) Murphy at the Sacred Heart church in Ida Grove, Wednesday, June 24, 1903 at 8 o'clock a.m., Rev. D. J. Brian officiating. Catherine Shea, sister of the groom and Joseph Alberic Murphy, brother of the bride were the witnesses.
The 1920 US census shows John M. (45) and Mary A. (41) and their children Catherine (13), Mary (10), Bernard J. (8), John P. (6) and Robert F. (4) living in Sioux City, Iowa.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Vivian (James) Deeg and Miss Catherine Virginia Shea of Arlington, Virginia and three sons Bernard J. Shea, John P. Shea and Robert F. Shea. Also, a brother, Raymond Murphy and eight grandchildren.
Her husband John Michael Shea, was born in Council Bluffs to Dennis and Hanora (Burke) Shea on May 5, 1874 and died in Sioux City in May 25, 1953. He was a stationary engineer and had charge of the first electric light plant at Ida Grove from 1893 to 1903. He formerly was employed as an inspector for the Hartford Steam Boiler Insurance Co., and as a salesman for the Murray Iron Works Co., of Burlington, Iowa. He was a member of the Engineers club and Blessed Sacrament Catholic church. The couple is buried in the Catholic cemetery at Ida Grove.
