Andrew Kneestang Olson was born at Honefoss, near Christiana, Norway, on March 4, 1841. In 1860 at the age of 19 he emigrated to America, coming to Galesville, Wisc., where he remained several years. From Galesville he moved to Coral City, Wisc., where he started in business for himself. In 1873 he moved to Highland Prairie, Minn., where he purchased a general mercantile store, serving also as postmaster. Disposing of his store at Highland, he moved in the summer of 1880 to Brookings county, settling in Sterling township, where he took up farming. Here he remained until coming to Brookings in 1905. During these years on the farm he served his community in various capacities, also serving one term in the state legislature, 1890-1891. Upon coming to Brookings in 1905, he entered into partnership with his son, Orrin Olson, and engaged in the mercantile business, retiring from the same in 1918.
He was united in marriage to Miss Maren Thompson of Highland Prairie, Minn., in 1868. To this union six children were born: Mrs. Dora Anderson, Edward, who died in infancy, Mrs. Emma Norman, Clara, Eva and Orrin. He is survived by his wife, five children and eight grandchildren. He was 81 years, four months and 18 days old at the time of his death.
