Note: Management of this Memorial, created in 2010 with very little information, had been turned over to Find A Grave. As the new Manager, I am in the process of documenting and updating the Memorial, so it can become a burial known with correct names, dates, and family relationships. If/when information on Martha's spouses and children can be confirmed, suggestions will also be made to update their Memorials. ~ June 2, 2023

***************

Martha's parents were Martha (Oglesby) and Thomas Dinsmore. Martha was born in Kentucky about 1818. Her maternal grandmother was Easter (Moore) Oglesby, a sister to Mary (Moore) Alloway Strange. Mary (Moore) and Abraham Alloway Strange were her Grand Aunt and Grand Uncle, and her first husband, Allen Alloway's paternal grandparents. In her lifetime, Martha had 3 known children: Peter O. Alloway, with her first husband, Allen Alloway; and Thomas E. Poyner and Jackson B. Poyner, with her second husband, James W. Poyner. She was also the stepmother to her 2nd and 3rd husband's children from former marriages, where their wives, also named Martha, had died. Martha's place and date of death or burial are currently unknown. (This Find A Grave was created in 2010 as a Burial Unknown. As the new Manager, and a relative, I am currently researching her life.)

1st Marriage:
Martha Dinsmore married Allen Alloway, the son of Jane "Jennie" (Curtis) and John Walker Alloway, on 15 Jan 1838 in Bartholomew County, Indiana (Divorce Granted April Term 1850 - Boone County, Indiana - Legal notice published in State Indiana Sentinel (Indianapolis, Indiana) 21 Feb 1850, 28 Feb 1850, 7 Mar 1850 and 14 Mar 1850, stating husband is not a resident of the state and that he should appear in Boone County Indiana Court, 3rd Monday in April 1850). It is not known if Allen Alloway deserted Martha or disappeared, as no record of Allen after the day of his marriage in 1838, and no information after the birth of his son, Peter, about 1839, has been found other than the legal notice regarding Martha's application for divorce. Allen's place and date of death or burial are currently unknown.

Martha and Allen's only child, Peter O. Alloway, was recorded as living with Martha's parents, Thomas and Martha (Oglesby) Dinsmore, when he was 11 years old, in the 1850 US Federal Census for Boone County, Indiana. Peter married Louisa Woodard, the daughter of Edward Woodard and Sarah "Sally" Shockley, on January 7, 1858, in Boone County, Indiana. Peter and Louisa had one daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Alloway. Sarah was born March 27, 1859. Her mother, Louisa, died April 7, 1859. In 1861, Peter enlisted in the Union Army, and he died of a wound on August 15, 1864 in a hospital in Alexandria, Virginia, confirmed by his Pension Record and a letter sent from the hospital to his mother, Martha (Dinsmore) Poyner, at Lebanon, Boone County, Indiana. Sarah Elizabeth's grandfather, Edward Woodard, as her guardian, applied for and received a Civil War Pension on Sarah's behalf. Sarah Elizabeth Alloway died March 25, 1872, just shy of her 13th birthday. (Source for birth and death dates: Civil War Pension Record for Peter O. Alloway at Fold3.)

2nd Marriage:
Mrs. Martha (Dinsmore) Alloway married James W. Poyner on 17 Apr 1850 in Boone County, Indiana. Martha was recorded as living with James and the children from his marriage to Martha (Sherley) Poyner in the 1850 US Federal Census. Martha (Sherley) Poyner had died on August 9, 1849. Martha (Dinsmore) and James had 2 children, Thomas E. Poyner, born in November 1854, and Jackson B. Poyner, born about 1858. At this time, it is unknown if their marriage ended by death or divorce, and when or where her 2nd husband died or is buried.

3rd Marriage:
Martha Poyner married Wesley P. Pierson on 9 Jan 1865 in Boone County, Indiana. Wesley P. Pierson's first marriage was to Martha Gallaway, the mother of his children. Wesley remarried for a third time in 1875. At this time, it is unknown if Martha (Dinsmore) and Wesley's marriage ended by death or divorce, or where and when Martha died or is buried.
