Harry was the son of John Taylor Gilliland and Mary E. (Kinnett) Gilliland. He died at the age of 15 years, 3 months, 23 days. The family bible page has the year of birth torn off, but is definitely May 11. The year was calculated from the age at death and is in conflict with when my grand father thought he was born (Dale) The obit for Harry was in the Buffalo County Beacon on Sept. 9, 1889.

"Died. The funeral of Harry E Gilliland occured at the residence of his father, John Gilliland, on Fort Farm Island yesterday morning at 9 o'clock. The service was conducted by Rev. O. R. Beebe, assisted in the singing by Mrs. Flint and Mrs. Mack of Gibbon. Deceased was born in Iowa and came, some 10 years ago, to Nebraska with his parents. He had reached the age of fifteen years, three months, and twenty three days Wednesday, September 4, 1889, when he died. He had been a sufferer for some three months from a form of rheumatism which had gradually reduced his strength, interfering at last with the action of his heart, until death came to rest(sic) him from the struggle with disease. The body was buried at the Riverside cemetery.
Harry was a bright and interesting boy, well liked by his play-mates and companions, apt in his studies and leader in any harmless sport, and it is with sympathy and sorrow in our hearts that we write this, for Harry was also our friend."
