Fortunatus II was born on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts on June 30, 1775. His father died when Fortunatus was three in a tragedy during the Revolutinary War on the the ship the General Arnold. The ship was grounded in Plymouth Harbor and a freezing storm engulfed the ship, killing most of the crew. He was buried in a mass grave on Burial Hill in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1778. Fortunatus II's mother's father, Cornelius Bassett, died after returning from war service a few months before her husband Fortunatus died. So Sarah Bassett, was left with three young children after both her husband and father died in 1778. Sometime after 1790, she left with her children, now in their late teens and early twenties, for New York state.
In the 1800 census of Lowville, Oneida (now Lewis) Co. Fortunatus is listed in the 16-26 years old male column, and presumably his mother, Sarah, is living with him and listed in the 45+ years old column. Fortunatus married Sybil Bacon sometime before October 21, 1802, probably Lowville. Sybil was born April 17, 1784 in Westminster, Worcester County, Massachusetts. Their children Sarah, William and Clement Newton may have been born in or around Lowville, NY. Fortunatus bought and sold land in and around Lowville, the last transaction in 1808.
In the 1810 census Fortunatus has moved to Rushville, Ontario County and is listed with a wife and two sons and a daughter. Their children Allen and Abigail were probably born here. But tragedy struck again and, ten days after giving birth to twins, John and Sybil in 1815, Sybil died. Fortunatus' mother, Sarah Bassett, helped care for the children until her death in 1818. Fortunatus was in poor health, also. He found homes for his youngest children. He placed Clement Newton and Allen with his brother William Bassett, in Rushville, Sybil to a Mrs. Goodrich of Naples, Ontario, NY and John to a Mr. Ellsworth, who took John to Northern Ohio. Fortunatus then took Sarah, William and Abigail with him to Cincinnatti, Hamilton County, Ohio, where his cousin Benjamin Bassett, was living. Within about a year after they arrived, Fortunatus died. It is not known where he was buried.
In 1838 his son, the Rev. John Ellsworth Bassett, attempted to locate his siblings Sarah, Abigail and William who went to Ohio. On November 9, 1838, he placed a note in the "Christian Advocate and Journal," published in New York for the Methodist Episcopal Church. The note read:
"November 9, 1838: Sarah, Abigail and William Bassett left Rushville, Ontario County, N. Y. in 1817 [sic 1818] and went to Cincinnati, Ohio. Their father, Fortunatus Bassett, died the same year [sic 1819] in Cincinnati, and they have not been heard of since. Any information will be very gladly received. Send to Rev. John E. Bassett, Gerry, Chautauqua County, N. Y."

Bassett made contact with his sister Abigail (Bassett) Servis in Ross County, Ohio, and she wrote about his contact to her sister Sarah (Bassett) Mott, who had recently moved to Switzerland County, Indiana. Sarah's reply letter to Abigail in the spring of 1839 was preserved by the Servis and Dancy families.
