In September 1815, when Abigail was just two years old, her mother Sybil (Bacon) Bassett died at the age of 31, just ten days after giving birth to twins John Elsworth and Sybil Bacon. The twins were separated and given to two separate families to raise.
In February 1818 Abigail's paternal grandmother, Sarah Bassett, died and shortly thereafter the family was split apart again. Abigail's father, Fortunatus Bassett, gave sons Clement and Allen to his older brother William Bassett to raise while Fortunatus took the remaining three children to Ohio: Sarah, age 15, William, age 13 and Abigail, age 5. Fortunatus went to Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, presumably to be near his cousin Judge Benjamin Bassett. Eighteen months later, in August 1819, Fortunatus Bassett died at the age of forty-four. At the age of six, Abigail Bassett was left an orphan.
Abigail was apparently raised by attorney and Judge Jacob Derrick Lowe and his wife Frances Kemper Wilds Lowe. When Abigail married Charles Servis in February 1830 she was underage at one month prior to her seventeenth birthday. The consent for Abigail's marriage was given by Jacob D. Lowe, Esq. Abigail's second daughter, Frances Sybil Servis, was apparently named after her two mothers; Frances for Frances Lowe, the mother who raised her, and Sybil (Bacon) Bassett, her birth mother. Abigail was educated as she wrote letters to her older sister Sarah (Bassett) Mott (1803-1847), with one letter from Sarah surviving from 1839 in which writes about the news of the birth of Abigail's son Jacob and of their youngest brother, twin John born in 1815, having contacted Abigail.
Abigail and Charles Servis had eight children. Their first child, Mary Ann, was born in 1832 in Warren County, Ohio. The remaining children were born near Bourneville, Ross County, Ohio: 2) Frances Sybil in 1834, 3) Rachel Mahala in 1837, 4) Jacob Morgan in 1839, 5) Sarah Catherine in 1842, 6) Julia in 1844, 7) Emma Jane in 1848, and 8) an unnamed daughter who was born and died on April 10, 1850.
In the spring of 1839 Abigail's older sister, Sarah (Bassett) Mott, wrote her a letter in which she wrote:
"[I]f it is the Lord's will that we should never meet again in this world, my dear sister, let us try to make Peace with God so we meet where parting is no more.
. . .
"Charles wrote that he was coming down this fall. Tell him to remember his promise.
. . .
"I am resolved to strive to meet you in Heaven in that world the weary are forever at rest."
On May 5, 1850, less than a month after the birth and death of her baby daughter, Abigail died at age 37, apparently from complications from the childbirth. Abigail was buried in Moore Cemetery in Twin Township, Ross County, next to her unnamed baby girl.
