Death is from an article in the Aug 12, 1937 Journal Reporter, Leon Iowa. It
says Ben Akes, brother-in-law of Mrs. Ola Akes of Leon, and himself a former
resident of this community, passed away at Lemon Cove, Calif., thursday of last
week. Bob Akes received a message from his mother, who has been in California
for some time, informing him of the death. She had been called to California
by the illness of her brother, J.L. Warner, of Stockton, Calif. Ben Akes is
survived by his wife. His obituary in the Visalis Times Delta, Thur. Aug 5,
1937, says Jay Raymond Smith 64, a native of Leon, Iowa, died at his home at
Kaweah Park in Three Rivers at 3 A.M. Today. Smith was born Oct. 28, 1873. On
Nov. 22, 1899, he married Mabel Briggs in San Bernardino, California. He owned
and operated a thriving music store in San Francisco for 20 years, retiring in
1930. Following his retirement he purchased what is known as the Kaweah Park
at Three Rivers. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mable B. Smith. Funeral
services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Hadley Visalia
chapel. Interment will be in the Woodlake cemetery.
Ben went by the name of Jay Raymond Smith or James Raymond Smith. He had a piano store and obviously did not think Akes was a good business name, so he changed it.
