Information is from his obituary found in the Decatur County Journal written
Wednesday, May 4, 1887. It is found at the Iowa Dept. of History and Archives,
Des Moines, Iowa. It reads: Died Joel Akes son of Mr. and Mrs. S.R. Akes died
at their home in Decatur Township April 21, 1887, Wednesday. The deceased was
sick about 7 weeks with lung fever. At one time during his sickness he rallied
and it was thought by all that he would recover, but he took a relapse and died
on the 21st age 21 years after severe suffering. The deceased was kind and
affectionate son and brother, industrious, upright, and true, and of such
disposition and manners as to make him warm friends among all who knew him.
During his last illness he was converted, passed away with resignation and in
peace. His funeral was preached at Palestine church Friday, April 22 by Rev.
Robb to a large and sympathizing congregation. His remains were buried in
Palestine cemetery where they await the ressurection morn.
