Widow of Early Day Sheriff to be Buried Here Wednesday - Samuel and Frank Zane Sons


Mrs. Rachael Maria Zane, 87 years old, pioneer resident of Carthage, died last night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Molly Mentzer, in Pawnee, Oklahoma, following an illness of several months. Death was due to senility.

Mrs. Zane came to Carthage in 1869, with her husband from Sangamon county, Illinois. The trip was made in covered wagons. They resided in Carthage for two years and then moved to a farm in the community. Her husband, James S. Zane served as sheriff of Jasper county in 1873 and 1874. After being elected to that office they returned to Carthage where they continued to make their home until his death in 1883.
Mrs. Zane then moved to the home of her son, Samuel L. Zane, and remained there until about four years ago when she went to Pawnee to reside with her daughter.
She was born August 25, 1840 in Sangamon county, Illinois.
Surviving are two sons; Samuel Zane and Frank H. Zane
Two grandchildren; James Zane and
Mrs. Ella Calhoon
and one great grandchild [Helen Calhoon] all of Carthage,
One daughter Mrs. Molly Mentzer of Pawnee
Two brothers; John F. Purvines and A. N. Purvines both of Illinois. John Purvines is 89 years old and A. N. Purvines is 95. Services were held at the Knell Chapel
