HAZEL MAE PENNINGTON, 92, formerly of Siloam Springs, AR, passed away Monday, June 16, 2008 at the Eufaula Manor Nursing Home in Eufaula, OK. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, friend, neighbor and sister in Christ.

Hazel was born on December 13, 1915 in Sulpher City, AR, the last surviving child of twelve children of Henry Lafayette Burris and Rhoda Lauraney Leonard Burris. Hazel graduated as the Valedictorian of her class from high school, graduating with honors. She married Clyde Lawrence Pennington on July 29, 1934 in Hulbert, OK, who preceded her in death in 1982.

Hazel worked for the John Brown family preparing meals, looking after the children, the home and assisted in planning, preparing and the serving many banquets. She loved cooking, gardening, reading, music, playing piano, nature programs, and handicrafts and did genealogy records. She worked with her husband, Clyde, on the family farm and along side of him at the Oak Hill Cemetery. During WWII she worked in a powder plant supporting the war effort.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she was very active and served in various capacities including; taught Children's Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Training Union, served as President of the Women's Missionary Union, book reviewer at the Luncheon Club, Keenagers, taught Senior Citizens Bible Class, sang in the Choir and the Senior Adult Choir, helped cook Wednesday night meals and had completed all the studies of the Christian Women Fellowship International.. She also served on various committees including the Election Committee and the Landscape committee where she helped plant the Prayer Garden at the new location of the First Baptist Church.

Hazel belonged to the Garden Club and loved to garden. Her garden was the subject of a painting that had been published in a book. She also wrote recipes for the local paper for 3years and volunteered at the Manna Center.

A visitation will be held at the First Baptist Church on Friday, June 20, 2008 from 10:00am to 11:00 am with the funeral service following the visitation at 11:00am. John Brown III and Louis Thomas will officiate the service with burial being held at the Oak Hill Cemetery under the direction of the Backstrom-Pyeatte Funeral Home of Siloam Springs.

In Lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Youth Mission Trip to Africa at the First Baptist Church of Siloam Springs.
