OBITUARY FROM PIONEER GRIP: ( August ? 1940)
Death came at the age of 81 years early Sunday morning to Jacob Clarence Hawkins, a veteran farmer of Box Butte County, at the home at 216 Toluca Ave. Funeral services were held this afternoon from the Alliance Christian church with Rev. Burton Davies officiating, followed by burial at the Hagaman Cemetery 15 miles southwest of Alliance. Mr. Hawkins is survived by his wife, with whom he celebrated his 61st wedding anniversary about nine months ago. He had been in failing health for the past two years or more. Mr. Hawkins was born December 22, 1858, in Edgar County, ILL and grew to manhood in that state. He married Rebecca Jane Anderson on November 3, 1879 and the couple moved to Seward County, Ne shortly after their marriage. In May of 1888 they came west among the early pioneers of the Box Butte County section, homesteading on a tract of farm land 13 miles south and west of the present site of Alliance. He farmed on this land until 1919, when he and his wife removed to the present home in Alliance. Mr. Hawkins has always been distinguished by his work in the Christian Church, serving as a church officer and choir member in Illinois, and helping to organize a Christian church 15 miles southwest of Alliance, in which he served as Sunday school superintendent and as elder. When the Alliance Christian church was organized Mr. and Mrs. Hawkins placed their membership here as charter members of the organization. After many years as elder, he was rewarded by election to the life office of honorary elder by that church in the year 1929. Mr. Hawkins is survived by his aged wife, two daughters, Mrs. George G. Clark and Mrs. John C. Wright, both of Alliance, one sister, Mrs. Winebreener of Orlando, FL and four brothers, William of Valentine, NE and E. L. of Torrington, Wy.

Excerpt from "Prairie Pioneers of Box Butte County" by Mae Manion - 1975:
"The Hawkins family, including the parents of Jacob Clarence, his brothers and their wives and sisters came to Nebraska in their own wagon train. Covered wagons were drawn by both oxen and horse teams. One melodeon organ was in the group, which was the first organ in the community and was used for the first church services established in the area where the Hawkins family lived."

As per original document kept on the EVERGREEN/UNDERWOOD Cemetery - Jacob C. Hawkins 1858-1940 and (Wife) Rebecca Jane Anderson Hawkins 1860-1940 - The couple requested NO headstone be put on their graves. (quote from JC Hawkins: "We came into this life with nothing, we want to leave with nothing."
