Ben J. Wiens was born on June 11, 1922, in Carson Township, Cottonwood County, Minnesota to the late Jacob J. and Ernstina (Pankratz) Wiens. He received his early education in rural District #16 in South Carson Township and then attended two years at Mt. Lake Bible School. He then farmed for several years on the home place before moving to Portland, Oregon in 1962 where he worked for a short time for a cleaning company as a custodian. Ben then worked for the City of Portland as a bus driver for the Portland Library until 1987 when he retired and returned to Windom.

Ben was united in marriage to Frances on November 22, 1969. This marriage was later dissolved on January 5, 1973.

Through the years, Ben was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles in Windom and was a member of the Golden "K" Kiwanis in Windom where he was past president. Ben's greatest enjoyments in life where many, which included, raising potatoes in his earlier years, cribbage where he was a past Windom Cribbage Champion, fishing up north with family and friends, hunting, attending Pankratz reunions, playing cards, going to the local casinos, hanging out at the Eagles Club in Windom, and morning coffee at the Happy Chef. Ben enjoyed playing "Ho,Ho,Santa" for organizations and family.

After three weeks in the Mt. Lake Good Samaritan Village in Mt. Lake, Ben was taken to the Windom Area Hospital in Windom where he passed away Friday afternoon, October 27, 2007 at the age of 85.

Ben's grateful family who mourns his loss includes two sisters, Ernstina Baerg of Bingham Lake; Elma Hegberg of St. Paul; three sister-in-laws, Esther Wiens of Dallas, Oregon; Doris Wiens of Windom; Irene Wiens Menken of Windom; special friend, Donna Gravley and her husband, Larry of Windom; and many nieces and nephews.

Ben is preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Alex, Menno, Jacob and Marv Wiens; one sister, Linda Peters; and one infant sister, Viola.
