Extract from book "Recollections of Britt, Iowa" published 1978 by the Britt Centennial Committee, p. 134:
In 1901 John Bailey quit the fifth grade of school and went to work in a grocery store. He worked for Tom and Bill Erwin who ran the Anneberg Grocery and Bakery. He also was the first grocery clerk for Brooks Grocery. In about 1915 he started his own grocery store where he continued in business until 1934 at which time he sold out to Cora (Boothroyd) Champion and son. After he quit the grocery business John went into construction business, building more than 20 homes in the Britt area.

He married Millie F Clark 14 May 1918 in Garner, Hancock, Iowa.
