Albert was born Alt Janssen Alts in Neuschoo, Ostfriesland, a son of Johann Alts Janssen and his wife Antje Alberts. In the United States he became Albert Janssen, sometimes Albert Johnson. He married Gesina Seggermann Lüdemann 16 January 1869 in Benson, Woodford Co, Illinois. She died and in 1876 Albert married Anna Ludeman, a daughter of his wife, Gesina, and her first husband, Heinrich Lüdemann.

Albert died in 1898 leaving his widow, Anna, two sons from his first marriage (John and Dirk/Dick) and seven children from his second (Henry, Jürgen/George, Anna, Jasper, Gesina, Bernard and Albert).
