He was a District paymaster for the U. S. Army in the New York City area during the War of 1812. He lived in New York City where he was a councilman in 1825 and engaged in the ship building business. He later moved to Bergen County, New Jersey where he was appointed a common pleas judge in 1838. In the early 1840's he moved to Parkersburg, West Virginia. He with his sons drilled the first oil well south of the Mason Dixon Line.
