Hilke Dirks Ammerman was born 12 January 1841 in Bunde Ostfriesland to Derk Englkes Ammerman (1794-1876) and Meemke Polman (1802-1887). The family immigrated on 25 August 1865 through Castle Gardens, NYC. A traveling companion was Grietje Wientjes who was orphaned as a child and was taken in by the Ammerman family. (Grietje (nee Wientjes) Bode is my great grandmother.) Hilke married Cornelius Jans Bode on 2 April 1868 in Ridott Christian Reformed Church in Stephenson County, IL where they made their home until 1875. Cornelius and Hilkea were the parents of seven children: John; Richard C.; Henry; Mamie; William; Anna; and Lillie, who died at the age of thirteen years. In 1875, the family sold their farm and moved to Grand Rapids MI where Cornelius entered the seminary. Hilke died 16 August 1943 at 102 years of age.
