LONGTIME SPRINGFIELD EDUCATOR WILLIAM WELLER DIES AT AGE 85
William Franklin Weller, who in his 35 years as a teacher, principal and mentor in the Springfield City Schools was known simply as "Bill" to his countless friends, died Tuesday in Community Hospital at the age of 85.
Bill Weller was a teacher and principal at Fulton Elementary School for 27 years before moving to Hayward Junior High School, from where he retired in 1967 after eight years as principal.
Weller, a New Carlisle native, might have been destined for an educational vocation; his father was principal of Olive Branch High School.
Although he at one time had considered becoming a lawyer, he turned instead to education.
In a story that appeared in the Springfield News Sun six years ago, Weller declared that some of his fondest memories were of the years he spent at Fulton Elementary School.
Edna Bacon, a retired truant officer with the city schools, remembered Bill Weller as "like a surrogate dad to all the kids at Fulton."
"He did so much for the families out there for so many years," Bacon said.
"Just last night(Tuesday) I went to the City Commission meeting and suggested that they name an unnamed road that runs into Davey Moore Park, "Bill Weller Drive,"," she said.
She said Weller had a particular influence on athletes, including Ron Burton, whom he first encountered at Keifer Junior High School, and who later played professionally for the Boston Patriots.
Bacon remarked also on Weller's good influence on the late Davey Moore, the local Golden Gloves boxing champion who went on to become featherweight champion of the world.
"Bill Weller was just so good, he was concerned about all of us and had the following of the parents," she said.
"He was held close in the hearts of many people, and was like a dad to many others."
Jane Lonsway, who had been Weller's secretary for many years, said Wednesday that "he was a good friend and a wonderful boss."
A colleague and old friend, Tom Conway, who also had been a teacher and coach in the city schools, said Wednesday that Weller "was a super guy to work for."
"I'll never forget the many nights that Bill and his wife and my wife and I would play canasta all night and watch the sun come up the next morning," Conway said.
Beyond his official capacities as a public school educator, Weller also had an active life outside the classroom.
He served for many years as director of the local sandlot baseball program and refereed football and basketball games for North and South High Schools.
He also had served as a member of the Ohio High School Athletic Association for 15 years.
"I liked to be around sports, but I have some reservations about their being overemphasized," he said in the newspaper story.
"I never regretted going into education," he declared in that article.
