Fred was the tenth child born to Joseph M.D.W. Wilson and wife Lucy "Lulu" Marion Caldwell Wilson.

His niece Venus, daughter of his older sister Sarah Edna & her husband Jesse Capshaw, was born four years after him, and she has some fun memories of with him when they were young teens, on his parents' ranch in Chama, NM:

William Hicks, husband of Fred's big sister Callie, paid them five cents for each prairie dog tail they'd bring him. They brought him the tails, alright, but didn't tell him they didn't kill them, as he'd intended them to. There were lots of prairie dogs running around Callie's place without tails!

Fred & Ben were so proud of a bear they shot one time, that they sent Venus a photo of it's hide. And, another time, Fred wanted to make choke cherry wine, but Venus & Ben drank all the juice before he got the chance to try.

Venus remembers meeting Alice & Mary for the first time. It was just after she graduated from high school & stopped by the Robison Ranch - met the girls as they were just beginning to date Fred and Ben.

Fred married Alice Peterson. They raised their four children on their ranch in LaPlata County, Colorado. When Fred was ill and near death, he asked his wife Alice if she would have his remains cremated & ashes dispersed on his ranch. In addition to fulfilling his wishes, Alice placed a marker at Hilltop Cemetery to memorialize him beside his parents graves in Pagosa Springs.

Gravesite Details

Marker at Hilltop Cemetery is just a 'memorial' marker. Alice placed it so a public place would be available to Fred's children/grands to pay respects. His remains were cremated and scattered on the ranch as he requested - not buried at cemetery.
