John Emanuel Snyder was the son of John Snyder and Hannah Marie Katherine Feuring.

John fought in the Civil War, Company B of the 179th Ohio Infantry. The 179th Ohio Infantry was organized at Camp Chase, Ohio, under Colonel Harley H. Sage on September 28th in 1864. It was mustered in September 29, 1864, for one year's service. John enrolled at Camp Chase on 16 September 1864. Many of its men had seen previous service. Reporting in Nashville, Tennessee, on October 8, 1864, it was placed on post duty there, assigned to the Second Brigade, Fourth Division, and Twentieth Army Corps. A part of the regiment took part in the Nashville battle, December 15th and 16th. The regiment remained on duty at Nashville, Tennessee till mustered out on June 18, 1865. Ordered to Columbus, the men were there paid and discharged, and the regiment was disbanded on June 27th. The regiment lost eighty enlisted men by disease. John was honorably discharged at Nashville on 17 June 1865.

John married Amelia Ridge about 1871. Four children were born to this marriage. They were divorced in 1882. John's next marriage was to Ella Jane Forest 29 Nov 1883 at Bucyrus, Ohio. She died 9 Dec 1888 at Bucyrus and is buried at Oakwood Cemetery. On 16 Jan 1895, at Bucyrus, Crawford County, Ohio, John married Ada Catherine Sprow, daughter of William Benjamin Sprow and Eliza Alice Norman. Four children were born to this marriage. (Ada died on 18 Feb 1954 and is buried at Oakwood Cemetery.)

John made his living as a carpenter and was a member of the United Brethren Church.

John died while living in the Old Soldiers' Home in Upper Sandusky, Erie County, Ohio. He had lived there only a few days before his death.
