The name John Snyder was originally Johannes Schneider and was changed after settling in Ohio.

John was the son of Johann "Michael" Schneider and Anne Catherina Althaus. He was born in Arfeld, district of Wittgenstein, Westfalen, Prussia.

His siblings were 1. Friedericka Schneider Krohe (1804-1869) 2. Christ Georg Schneider (1807-1811)
3. Anna Elisabethe "Elisa" Schneider Krey/Kray (born 29 Oct 1812)
and 4. Johanna Marie Schneider Reuter (born 8 Nov 1815) All born in Arfeld.

John married Hannah Marie Katherine Feuring, daughter of Johann Friedrich Feuring and Marie Katherine Gellbach, 31 Mar 1834 in Arfeld, district of Wittgenstein, Westfalen, Prussia.

In April of 1834, the John Snyder's who were living in Arfeld, in the district of Wittgenstein, Westfalen, Prussia, traveled to the port of embarkation in Bremen, and took passage on a ship... destination, hopefully, New Orleans. Although family stories tell of John and Hannah being shipwrecked for 14 weeks, rescued, and taken to Baltimore, Maryland, ship records indicate their journey lasted only six to eight weeks. They arrived in Baltimore on 1 July 1834. Ships often had to wait in the harbor for a day or two for clearance, and so it was on July 2, 1834, that John and Hannah began their new life in America. They soon migrated west to Ohio, purchasing land at Bucyrus, Ohio.

John filed a "Declaration of Intention" on 27 October 1842 and received his Naturalization Papers on 29 October 1844. They continued to live at Bucyrus for the next 32 years. In 1864, they traveled to Illinois, settling at Olney in Richland County. After living there for nine years, they returned to Ohio, settling in Dunkirk, Hardin County. They lived there only one year and then returned to Bucyrus just before John died in 1873.

John and Hannah were members of the St. John's Church of Christ (formerly reformed), located on Lane Street in Bucyrus, Ohio.
