The fourth child of Samuel Lewis Yarborough (1873-1912 and Sarah Elizabeth Guy (872-1915), Gladys had two sisters and two brothers. Both their parents died young; their father was accidentally killed by a nephew at age 40 in 1913, and their mother died less than two years later, age 43. Gladys married very young, at age 14, on 15 Nov. 1916, the year after her mother's death, in Greensburg, St. Helena Parish LA. Her husband was 24, also from a farming family in the area around Liverpool, LA. Gladys was literate but must have attended school only until the time of her marriage.

The couple farmed. They had four sons and a daughter: Wilma Janie (b. 1918), Clarence James (b. 1921), Sam (b. 1924), Jewel Dean (b. 1927), and Franklin Woodrow (b. 1932).
