A scholar and travel journalist, 35-year-old Thomas Davis died suddenly while on an expedition in Merida, Mexico. Raised in Skaneateles, he had been born into a family with a strong military tradition. His father was Maj. Thomas Davis, USA, and his mother, the former Anne Marie Lawton, was the daughter of West Point graduate and Congressional Medal of Honor winner Louis B. Lawton, cited for heroism during the Boxer Rebellion in China. Tom's only sibling, his younger brother Lt. Lawton Davis, had also graduated from West Point and was later killed at the Battle of the Bulge in 1945. A US Navy veteran of World War II himself, Tom returned to civilian life, writing and traveling while pursuing graduate studies. An affable, well-regarded young man, his unexpected death at 35 stunned all who knew him. His parents were buried here with him after their deaths in 1988.
