Leonard was the youngest of the five children of Henry and Jane (Miller) Mollenhauer. The couple had married on April 26, 1836 in St. John, Lancaster, Lancashire, England. Their children were Eleanor (abt 1836-?), John Herman (1838-1852), Mary Anne (1839-1843), Richard (1841-1842), and Leonard (1843-1893). Henry was a sugar refiner and manufacturer in Liverpool, England. All of Henry and Jane's children were born in Liverpool.

Leonard apprenticed as a Mariner or seaman in Liverpool.
On October 13, 1868, he married Dorcas Maria Dalton in Christ Church, Everton, Lancashire, England. Leonard and Dorcas had four children; Henry James (1869-1945), Leonard William (1871-aft 1930), Frank John (1873-1928), and Edith Maud (1876-1960), all born in Liverpool.

In 1877, the family left Liverpool on a White Star Liner to make their home in America. They settled in Jersey City, New Jersey, where Leonard was employed in a Postal Office.
