WILLIAM BATES: 86, a resident here since he was 2yrs old, died yesterday [Tuesday 5-01] in a local hospital after a long illness. He was born in Wisconsin 19 Jul 1869. He came with his father Jos Bates from Auslin MN & learned the blacksmith's trade in the wagon & carriage shop his father operated here. Many of the carriages used in the Fiesta parade were built by the elder MrBates. He married the former Hattie Esselstyn of ClearLake MN in 1903 in the First Presbyterian Church here, with the late RevWarren Moore officiating. MrBates had worked for ElPaseo Iron Works & later for the Hendry Iron Works. He was a member of the Independent Order of Foresters.
Surviving besides his wife-Hattie are 2 bros: Eugene-Bakersfield & Raymond-LosAngeles; & a sis: MrsLouise Wickham-Beckley WV & several nieces & nephews, among whom is Carl Muzzall-Carpinteria.
Services will be conducted tomorrow [5-03] in the Welch & Ryce chapel by RevEdward Bow-len. Graveside committal service will be at the SantaBarbara Cem.
