[NANCY SHERBONDY BATES]-MrsJoseph: wife of the senior member of the J W Bates Lemon company passed away this morning [9-22], at the family residence, 332 East Anapamu St, in the seventieth year of her age. In her death Santa Barbara loses another pioneer resident. Mr&MrsBates came here in 1873. The deceas-ed took an active interest in GAR affairs & was one of the organizers of the local Woman's Relief Corps, being elected by the members as first president of the organization as a testi-monial to her energy & devotion to the corps. While her death was directly due to pneumon-ia, MrsBates had been an invalid for the last 5 years. Had she lived until July, Mr&Mrs Bates would have celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary.
The deceased is survived by husband & a large family of children. The funeral & inter-ment will take place Monday morning [3-24], but will be private.
