"Montcalm County Michigan has a man 87 years old who never used profanity, tobacco, or liquor. The man is David Lyman Demarest, one of the oldest pioneers of the county, who now resides with his daughter, Mrs. Albert J. Williams. He watched Greenville grow from a forest; in fact he assisted in the building of the first house, this being for the occupancy of his uncle, John Green, the family for whom Greenville was named. His father came west in 1836 and settled in Ionia Co, Mich."

"When Lyman David was only 26 years old he decided to seek his fortune in California (traveling by boat around Cape Horn) during the gold rush, but after 3 years he decided Michigan was good enough for him, and when he returned he took a wife, Miss Clarinda Satterlee."
