Samuel, son of Lucas & Maria Demarest, was born in Broadalbin, (then Montgomery Co., now Fulton Co., N.Y.). (According to the printed Demarest History, Samuel was born in or near Cayuga Lake, N.Y.) He was apprenticed to a shoemaker at age 15 years was to receive, when he became of age, a suit of clothes, a kit of tools and a sum of money. In 1818 Samuel married Anna P. Clark, & they moved to Steuben Co., near Prattsburg, where all of their children were born. From there they moved to Michigan in 1837, with 8 of their children, the oldest 18 years, the youngest 1 year, leaving 2 little graves near the old house in Steuben Co. They settled first in Washtenaw Co., Michigan.

In the fall of 1840 Samuel Demarest took up land from the Government in Otisco, Iona Co., Mich., & with the oldest daughter, (as cook), Debby Ann (later Mrs. Jerome Pease) & 2 sons, they went to Greenville, where his brother-in-law, John Green (for whom Greenville was named) was running a sawmill, (my dad, Chas L. Demarest points out this is incorrect, our County History says that John Green came later, in 1844, at which time they built the dam and mill together.) They got out material for a house & barn, which are still standing on the old farm after 90 years, (not now in 1972), ready to move the family in the spring of 1841 to the place now known as the Upson farm, 1 mile west of Belding on Road M-44, where the Upsons (now Grandson) have owned the place for over 65 years.

The Demarest children all married but one, all living for about 25 years within 2 hours drive of the old home, where we went for reunions on Jan. 1st, Grandfather's birthday.

There was a great Gold Fever in 1849 in California & Samuel Demarest went overland (his son Lyman David went by boat around Cape Horn) & came back across the Isthmus reveling in the fine nuts & fruit. He brought his daughters earrings & the sons gold nuggets. He was gone about 2 years.

In 1863 they sold the farm to the Upsons, father & son, and moved to a small place 2 miles west of Greenville, where his son Lyman & daughters Adaline & Frances lived on farms. They celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary 20-Jan-1868, with their children & 20 grandchildren. In October 1868, they moved to Audrian Co., Missouri, where their daughter Susan "Fant" & husband Abram Isaac Satterlee had gone & son Capt. Samuel Demorest was living in near-by Mexico, Mo., as well as Clark L. & wife & their son "Dell", Henry Green & wife, Angeline (D), went with them. Samuel (D) was kicked by a horse & died from the effects 19-Mar-1869, & was buried in Quiver Church Cemetery, near Vandalia, Mo., age 76 years. I think within a year his wife, Anna P. (Clark) Demarest moved back to the old Demarest place near Greenville, Mich., where they lived until her death 7-May-1881, age 84 years. She was buried in Forest Home Cemetery near Greenville; her only unmarried son Valentine (Peter) died 2-Jan-1903, age 77, was buried beside his mother.

Part of a letter from "Betty" Elizabeth Demorest of R.D. #1, Belding, Iona Co., Mich., received 4-Aug-1972.
