Best, Claude Newton, 77, Rt. 7, Maryville, died Tuesday at U-T Medical Center. He was a retired employee of ALCOA and a member of the 25-Year Service Club.

He was preceded in death by a son, Claude Best Jr.

Survivors include: wife, Susie Mae Poplin Best; son, Glynn Best, Smyrna, Ga.; daughters, Rosa Lee Council, Alabama, Marie Stanley, Juanita Poling, Betty Headrick; brothers, Edgar, Burl, Vern and Lawrance Best; sisters, Mary Coning, Edith Dawson, all of Maryville; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Carpenter's United Methodist Church with the Revs. David Knight and Fred Garner officiating. Interment will follow at Carpenter's United Methodist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation, Patient's Service Fund, 4450 Walker Blvd., Knoxville, Tenn., 37917. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at McCammon-Ammons Funeral Home.
