1st SGT (12Z50). KIA at Dak To, Kontum Province, South Vietnam, when the communications bunker in which he was in took a direct hit from an enemy 122mm rocket. 15th Eng Co, 299th Eng Bn, 937th Eng Group, 18th Eng Bde, USARV Eng Com, U. S. Army.
Also KIA at the same time were: SP4 Edward Thomas Kiezkowski; SP4 Dennis Ray Meetze; SP4 David Roy Mann; 1LT Franklin LeRoy Koch; Sp4 Valentine Marion Dwornik; SP5 James Stephen Colombero; and, SP4 Floyd Edward Barber.
SGT Benefiel was included in the June 27, 1969 LIFE cover story entitled "The Faces of the American Dead in Vietnam: One Week's Toll."
