The Rockdale Reporter - December 18, 2003 Funeral services for Wilburne "Bill" Alford, 75, were held at 2 PM Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003 at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale with Rev. Chuck Solomon of Forest Grove Christian Church officiating. Burial followed in the Forest Grove Cemetery near Rockdale. He died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003 in the Richards Memorial Hospital in Rockdale.
Mr. Alford, a lifelong resident of Rockdale, was born July 4, 1928 in Rockdale to Thomas Ewing and Carolina Rose Alford. He had been employed with I.G.C. in mine operations, reitiring in 1972 after 20 years. He and Elois McGoldrick were married January 20, 1952 in Maysfield.
After retirement he worked at UT football ticket gates. He was a member of Rockdale Christian Church and served as elder and deacon, helped build the Little League baseball complex and served as Little League president for many years.
Mr. Alford played all sports in high school, enjoyed watching all sports, fishing and hunting. He was a US Navy veteran and boxed while in the Navy, and was a referee for basketball and football, and a baseball umpire.
Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers, Johnnie, Clarence, Frank and Jamie Alford; sisters, Luvenia Alford, Mary Tuma and Edith Brown.
Surviving are; wife, Elois Alford of Rockdale; son, Reggie Alford and wife Ramona of Rockdale; daughters, Beckie Zelisko and husband Mike of Rockdale and Beth Laywell of Rockdal; twin brother, Weldon Alford and wife Jean of Rockdale; grandchildren, Blaine Zelisko, Ashley Laywell and Morgan Alford.
Pallbearers were Dwayne Farwell, Charles Lagrone, Kenny Alford, Ricly Alford, Mile Alford and David Alford. Honorary pallbearers were Jim Currey, Frank Burrough, Buddy Howell, Wayne Neal, Claude Spence, Rod Spence, Johnny Menges, Graham Young, Junior Whiteley, Wayne Cryer and O.A. Doss.
