FIRST DEATH IN CITY
Mrs. Elliot became the first traffic fatality of the year for Modesto at 5:10 PM Friday when her car collided with one driven by Kenneth Dean Zwahlen, 35, 1225 College Avenue, at Briggsmore and College Avenues.
She was thrown from her vehicle, which turned over completely and landed on its wheels. The police said she had only a learner's permit.
Message Elleby had lived in the county since 19 09 when she and her late husband, Frederick W. Elleby, moved to a farm on Prescott Road from New Mexico.
She remained physically active all her life and when she was 68 years old accompanied her husband on a 100 mile ride along the John Muir Trail north from Tuhunga, Los Angeles County. Until she was 80, she rode annually in the Modesto 4th of July parades.
She was interested in community affairs. She and her husband donated land for the Prescott Community Hall and organized the Pressscott inter-denominational Sunday school. She acted in and directed theatrical events at the Prescott Hall during the 1920's and in the 30's when Dodge City was filmed in the county, she and her husband appeared in it.
