A neck wound received in the Civil War never healed and he died from it in a cancerous condition on August 4, 1896 in Gainesville, Missouri, where he is buried. About December 17, 1870 he moved his family from Gamaliel, Kentucky to Ozark County, Missouri where he engaged in mercantile business (Comer and Son).
