Sarah I. Ayers was born February 22, 1848, in Wauseon, Fulton County, OH, to David Daniel Ayers, Jr., and Delilah Shellenberger Ayers. Various census records indicate she had 5 siblings: Dorothy Marie Ayers Geringer, Abraham Ayers, Delilah E. Ayers Schooler, Lavinia Ellen Ayers Fogleman, and David Ayers.

Sarah married Alexander Worth Tansey on January 1, 1867 in Jasper County, IA, and census records indicate they had two children, Ozro (or Ozra) W. Tansey and Ora B. Tansey. Her sister Delilah was married to Manoah Barber Schooler, Sr., in 1865. Alexander Tansey murdered 5 people in 1872 and was subsequently hung after he was caught. Sarah's sister, Delilah, died in 1873. After these two deaths, Sarah Ayers Tansey married Manoah Barber Schooler, Sr., on February 25, 1875 in Caledonia, Ringgold County, IA.

Manoah had four children with Delilah: Arthur Schooler, Blanche Schooler Adams, Clara Schooler McGill, and Floyd Schooler. These nephews and nieces, now also stepchildren of Sarah's, continued to live with Sarah and Manoah after they married. Sarah's two children with Alexander Tansey lived with their grandmother Delilah Ayers according to census records.

Manoah and Sarah had seven children together: Carrol "Carl" Schooler, Ledraw "Richard" Schooler, Sarah Isabel "Sadie" Schooler McGill, Bessie May Schooler, Manoah Barber Schooler, Jr., Leroy Elvis Schooler, and Allen Robinson Schooler.

Sarah died July 22, 1904, near Oneida, Nemaha County, KS.
