Laban Croskey "L.C." Jamar Jr. entered into eternal rest on Aug. 4.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Professor Laban and Bessie Jamar, and his brothers, Elihu and Victor Jamar.
Funeral services for Mr. Jamar will be held at noon Friday at St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dr. Homer L. McCall officiating. Interment will be at Northside Cemetery with Royal Funeral Home directing.
The body will lie in repose one hour prior to services. Mr. Jamar will be available for viewing from noon to 9 p.m. today and from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
L.C. was born into one of Huntsville's oldest families. His father and mother were longtime educators in the Madison County School System. As a boy, he and his brothers were active with their father's newspaper and helped Professor Jamar, the editor of the paper, propel the Huntsville Mirror (currently Speakin' Out Weekly News) into one of the most successful African American newspapers in the region.
He attended elementary and high school at William Hooper Council and graduated in 1951. After graduation, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. He served his country well. After completing his call to duty, he returned home and enrolled at Alabama A&M College and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in industrial arts.
L.C. worked at IBM as a program analyst. He was one of the first local residents employed by IBM in Huntsville in 1963. He supported numerous programs during the infancy stages of the space program and beyond. He retired from IBM, and maintained an active life for many years.
He was a faithful member of the Fraternal Club; a charity organization in Huntsville, for over 40 years. He enjoyed family reunions and loved spending time with his cousins from Huntsville, New York, Ohio, Florida and from all over the United States. Additionally, some of his favorite pastimes included outdoor grilling and keeping a well manicured lawn.
Precious memories of L.C. will be cherished by one brother, James E. Jamar of Huntsville; children, Jacquelyne J. Flournoy and husband Cecil of Chattanooga, Janice A. Jamar of Huntsville, Laban Rodney Jamar and wife Sharonne of Manassas, Va., Ronald E. Jamar of Rome, Ga., Madgie Strong Jamar and Catherine Strong of Huntsville; six grandchildren, Cecil B. Flournoy Jr. and wife Nikaela of Iowa City, Iowa, Catherine M. Flournoy of Knoxville, Janette A. Jamar, Jeris Y. Jamar, Jessica M. Jamar, and Laban Rodney Jamar Jr. of Manassas ; four nieces, Jacqueline Hewlett, Sonya Leslie and husband Kenneth of Huntsville, Jeris V. Jamar of Birmingham, and Janeen Johnson and husband Anthony of Huntsville; three great-nieces, Rokichia D. Haywood of Huntsville, Alicia Leslie of Tuscaloosa and Shecola Hewlett of Columbus, Ohio; one great-nephew, Kenneth Leslie Jr. of Tuscaloosa; and a host of special cousins, relatives, and friends.
