Madgie Strong Jamar was born on December 3, 1932, in the rural community of Pond Beat, the area currently known as Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Alabama. She was the only child born to the late Robert and Catherine Rooks Strong. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Ronald Edward Jamar. She peacefully departed this life in the comfort of her home on December 19, 2023, with her daughter, Janice, by her side.

Madgie gave her life to Christ at an early age. She was a faithful member of Center Grove United Methodist Church where she served in many capacities. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, a communion steward, and a member of the finance committee. Madgie loved her church. She enjoyed singing beautiful hymns. Before her health failed, she was always eager to serve when there were special events at the church. When she was no longer able to attend services, Madgie enjoyed visits from the Center Grove Men's Ensemble when they serenaded her in her home. She equally enjoyed visits from the United Methodist Women's visitation group.

Madgie began her educational journey at Horton School in Pond Beat. After moving from this community to Huntsville, she went on to attend Winston Street Elementary and Councill High Schools. She matriculated at Alabama A&M College (currently Alabama A&M University) where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education.

As a schoolteacher, Madgie delighted in educating and enhancing the lives of hundreds of children for over 30 years. She began her professional teaching career in the Huntsville City School System and taught school at Cavalry Hill Elementary School, Highlands Elementary, and Blossomwood Elementary School. To this day, many of her former students refer to her as their favorite teacher! After moving from Huntsville to Manassas, Virginia, she taught school at Loch Lomond Elementary and Lake Ridge Elementary schools in the Prince William County Public School District. She took pride in her classrooms and enjoyed the many accolades she received such as best decorated door, best decorated bulletin board, and other awards. Through the years as a teacher in Virginia, many parents approached the principal and requested Mrs. Jamar to be their child's teacher in the next school term. This happened many times and it filled her heart with joy! As a perk of living in close proximity to our nation's capital, she enjoyed taking her classes on field trips to view the sites and historic monuments in Washington, D.C. This was not only the highlight of the children's day, as their teacher, Madgie enjoyed these special, memorable, and educational field trips as well! Even though she was afraid of snakes, she chaperoned her students on overnight camping trips.

Madgie loved Huntsville and making a difference in her community. She was a volunteer and collected donations for March of Dimes and Mothers Against Drunk Drivers. She was a member of the Progressive Homemakers Club and actively participated in the many events, teas, charitable causes, etc. that they held.

Madgie was an extraordinary homemaker. She kept an immaculate home and enjoyed decorating it. Like her mother, Catherine Strong, she surrounded herself with beautiful items. She enjoyed shopping for unique items that fit her taste. While living in Virginia, she loved going to auctions and bringing back beautiful antiques. She had a love for Depression glass, Carnival glass, and Occupied Japan artifacts. Furniture with an Oriental motif also caught her eye. She has a curio filled with various collectibles which were given to her from her children. When her son, Rodney, worked near the nation's capital in Langley, Virginia, his yearly Christmas gifts to her were the sitting President's collectible Christmas ornaments! Madgie was very excited when she opened the unique White House ornaments.

In addition to collecting, Madgie's hobbies included the love of baking, cooking, and trying out new recipes. She and her daughter, Jacquelyne, enjoyed sharing and exchanging recipes through the years. She also had a green thumb and she enjoyed planting seasonal flowers.

Madgie was married to the late Laban Croskey Jamar, Jr. (L.C.) for 33 years. To this union, four children were born: Jacquelyne, Janice, Laban Rodney, and the late Ronald Jamar. As the mother or four children, she was involved in all of their extracurricular activities such as band, wrestling matches, cub scouts, dance team, chorale practice, vacation Bible school, cheerleading, costume making, uniform mending, fundraisers, and shuttling them back and forth to wherever their busy lives took them. Her home had an open-door policy; all of her children's friends were welcome! In addition to her children, the crown jewels of her life were her grandchildren: Cecil Jr., Catherine, Janette, Jeris, Jessica, and Laban Rodney, Jr. She was affectionally called Gaga. She was always excited to see them and hear about everything that they had going on in their lives. Not only were her children and grandchildren her pride and joy, but Madgie was also blessed to see four generations when her great-grandchildren were born. How wonderful it was to see the light in her eyes when they visited and interacted with her.

Madgie faced many health challenges in her later years, but she always remained cheerful and faithful to the Lord. Her daughter, Janice, transferred from her job in Los Angeles in 2007 and moved into the home with her. Along with Janice, all of Madgie's children contributed to her care.

Madgie leaves to cherish precious memories, her children: Jacquelyne Flournoy (Cecil Sr.), Janice Jamar, Laban Rodney Jamar (Sharonne); her grandchildren, Dr. Cecil Jr. (Dr. Nikaela), Catherine, Janette, Jeris, Jessica, Laban Rodney, Jr.; her great-grandchildren, Cecil III, Kendall, Kyah, Yara, Dawson, Kwynn, and Nori. She is also survived by a special cousin, Carrie Wilkins, a lifelong friend, Georgia Ruth Bearden, four nieces, Jacqueline Hewlett, Sonya Leslie, Jeris Jamar, and Janeen Johnson, and a host of cousins and friends. She will forever remain in our hearts.

Funeral service will be 12:00 noon, Thursday, December 28, 2023, at the Center Grove United Methodist Church (185 Plummer Road Huntsville, AL 35806) with Reverend R. Seth Shamery officiating. Interment will be in the Valhalla Memory Gardens. Mrs. Jamar will lie in repose one hour prior to funeral time.
