Killed in Accident...Joint Rites Set For Mother, Son
Honey Grove
Joint funeral services for a Honey Grove mother and her son who were killed Saturday night in a pedestrian accident on Interstate 30 about a mile west of Greenville will be held Wednesday after, 2:30 O'clock, at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral chapel.
Killed in the accident were Mrs. Sallie Mae Echart, 72, and her son, Alvin Edward Echart, 51.
Officiating at the services will be the Rev. Elmo Strickland of Honey Grove, assisted by the Rev. Marvin Dennis. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
The mother and her son were killed instantly about 11 O'clock Sunday night when they apparently stepped from their car to examine a flat tire. Report said they were standing about a foot inside the west traffic lane when they were struck by the oncoming car.
Mrs. Echart's body was thrown about 225 feet from the point of impact and her son about 60 feet. Both were declared dead at the scene.
Officers identified Len Owen Graham, 25, of Duncanville, as driver of the car. The impact caved in the roof of his car and he was taken to a Greenville hospital for treatment of a fractured hand and other injuries.
Mrs. Margaret Moore and her 2-year-old son, passengers in the Graham car, escaped injury.
Mrs. Sallie Mae Echart, whose home was at 609 West Main in Honey Grove, was born April 21, 1899, in the Selfs community, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William P. Burkett.
She was married Dec. 25, 1917 to Hubert Echart who preceded her in death.
She is survived by two sons, Hubert Echart, Jr. of Ben Wheeler and James Echart of Houston; one daughter, Mrs. Barbara Henrichsen of Houston; one brother, Alvin C. Burkett of Houston; one sister, Mrs. F. E. Pitts of Dallas; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was a member of the Assembly of God Church.
Alvin Edward Echart was born Sept. 9, 1919 in Petty. He was married in 1946 to Dorothy Butler, who preceded him in death in January of 1962.
He is survived by two sons, Scottie Echart of Clebit, Okla., and two grandchildren.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving five years overseas.
The family will be at the funeral home Tuesday night from 7 to 8 o'clock.
