Martha was the second of Robertson & Martha Amanda (Williamson) Mize's nine children. Her siblings were: William J., Abner "Dooley," Fidelia Ellen, George W., Mary Eva, Robert M., Erminnie "Belle," & Leonard Walter.
Martha married a widower, Rev. Francis Bowman, in Newton Co, MO on April 11, 1880. His wife, Isabella, had died in Newtonia on November 26, 1878, leaving several small children, which Martha helped raise.
Francis and Martha had one daughter, Gertrude "Grace" born in El Paso, El Paso Co, TX on January 27, 1886. They returned to Newtonia, and Francis died in 1888.
Martha was the sister of the editors of The Newton County News in Newtonia, which had been started in 1890.

"Last Saturday the editor of this paper and wife drove to Newtonia to see the amateur play, "The Drunkard." It is 12 miles to the village and dark overtook us some time before we got there, but we were well repaid for the trip. The audience numbered about 400. Dr. J. W. Lamson played the chief part for the men and his wife played opposite him. Little Belle Mize and Miss Lizzie Mize acted their parts well also. The play lasted until midnight, and we drove the 12 long miles home but arrived safely with no accidents."
