Martha was the second of Robertson & Martha Amanda (Williamson) Mize's nine children. Her siblings were: William J., Abner "Dooley," Fidelia Ellen, George W., Mary Eva, Robert M., Erminnie "Belle," & Leonard Walter.

Martha married a widower, Rev. Francis Bowman, in Newton Co, MO on April 11, 1880. His wife, Isabella, had died in Newtonia on November 26, 1878, leaving several small children, which Martha helped raise.

Francis and Martha had one daughter, Gertrude "Grace" born in El Paso, El Paso Co, TX on January 27, 1886. They returned to Newtonia, and Francis died in 1888.

Martha was the sister of the editors of The Newton County News in Newtonia, which had been started in 1890.

SIXTY YEAR AGO (March 16, 1871)
"The late storm damaged the college building in Newtonia to such extent that school can not be held there. W. J. Mize has advanced the funds to complete the Cumberland Presbyterian church, and Miss Lizzie Mize will open school there when the building is complete."

"Miss Lizzie Mize's school in Newtonia is to open Monday April 17."

SIXTY YEARS AGO (June 1, 1871)
"The Christian denomination in Newtonia are soon to commence the erection of a church building, 42 X 66 feet, on a lot donated by Judge Ritchey. Miss Lizzie Mize's school at that place now has 70 pupils."

SIXTY YEARS AGO (Nov. 2, 1871)
"The Newtonia Academy opens on Monday. The directors have secured the services of Mr. William Mize and Miss Lizzie Mize as teachers."

SIXTY YEARS AGO (February 15, 1872)
"Last Saturday the editor of this paper and wife drove to Newtonia to see the amateur play, "The Drunkard." It is 12 miles to the village and dark overtook us some time before we got there, but we were well repaid for the trip. The audience numbered about 400. Dr. J. W. Lamson played the chief part for the men and his wife played opposite him. Little Belle Mize and Miss Lizzie Mize acted their parts well also. The play lasted until midnight, and we drove the 12 long miles home but arrived safely with no accidents."

ITEMS OF 60 YEARS AGO (August 24, 1876)
"The fall term of the Newtonia High school with Prof. S. M. Dicky as principal will start Monday, Oct. 2. Miss Lizzie Mize, one of the most accomplished teachers of the southwest, is to be a teacher."

"The body of Mrs. Elizabeth Bowman who died in Nebraska where she was with her daughter, arrived in Neosho Tuesday and was taken to her former home at Newtonia for interment. She was one of the Mize sisters who formerly published the Newton County News at Newtonia."
