The USS Houston went down in action on 1 March 1942 against a Japanese Invasion Task Force on the south coast of Java during the Battle of Sunda Strait. Of the original crew of 1,061, 368 crew members made it to shore and were captured by the Japanese. 291 would survive to the end of the war.
He also has a cenotaph memorial marker at the Bellevue Cemetery in Danville, Kentucky
