Joseph Harry Aull entered service in World War II on July 3, 1943 at Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana. He was a member of the U.S. Navy reserve on active duty in July 1945 when he died. His ship, the U.S.S. Indianapolis had just completed a secret mission delivering the atomic bombs which were used to end the war with Japan. The ship was sunk 450 miles of Leyte Island, the Phillipines.
His body was not recovered and he was memorialized at Manila American Cemetery, Tablets of the Missing, The Phillipines.
The Owensboro Messenger on September 2, 1945 had this report:
J. H. Aull, Philpot 2, is Missing In Action
Seaman Joseph Harry Aull has been missing in action since July 30, last, according to word received from the War department by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Aull, Philpot, Route 2. He has been in the Navy twenty-seven months and overseas two years.
Seaman Aull was stationed aboard the U. S. S. Indianapolis which was sunk in less than 15 minutes, presumably by a Japanese submarine, twelve minutes past midnight, July 30, and 883 crew members lost their lives in one of the Navy's worst disasters. The cruiser went down 450 miles off Leyte while on an unescorted high speed run from San Francisco. Nobody outside of the oil-covered circle of men and debris in the water knew her fate until after a Peleliu search-plane led the way to the rescue of the 315 men who survived five days in the seas.
