He was the Ball Turret Gunner on B-17, named "Cover Girl". They were on a mission to bomb Politz, Germany. Cover Girl was piloted by Lt HP Silverstein. The blew up in mid-air after being hit by flak. Two crew members were thrown clear and parachuted safely but the others were killed in action.
