Washington County Review, December 3, 1903
BIVENS, J.W. – {from The St. Paul Mountain Air} Another old settler has passed away – Capt. J.W. Bivens died Thursday evening, November 26, at 7 o'clock at the residence of his son-in-law, "Babe" Brashears, Combs, Arkansas where he and Mrs.Bivens have been making their home for some time. A second attack of apoplexy – the first occurring about two years ago – was the cause of his death. Captain Bivens was well known throughout Northwest Arkansas, having lived in this vicinity for over 70 of the 78 years of his life. He was a noted hunter in early days and a merchant and justice of the peace for many years and a Captain in the Federal army. On June 6th, 1902 he was robbed of $6,500 in gold. His remains were interred at the Brashears cemetery Friday. He leaves a wife and nine children.
