A former Wilcox-Rich employe. Leonard Roy Palmer, seaman, first class, was killed while in the service of his country March 9 and now is buried in the army cemetery on Japtan island. Eniwetok, Marshall Islands, according to a message received from the navy by his wife, Bertha E. Palmer of 220 Duane. Level Park.
The 34-year-old seaman was inducted June 13, 1943. from local board No. 3. He received his boot training at Great Lakes and was assigned to duty in the Pacific.
Seaman Palmer was born April 16. 1908. in Montcalm county. He attended White Plains public school in Reynolds township. Montcalm county, and lived on farms in that vicinity at Grandville and Grand Rapids before coming to Battle Creek in 1940 and obtaining employment at the Wilcox-Rich plant.
He was married Sept. 19. 1937, at Grand Rapids, and his wife also is a former employe at the Wilcox-Rich plant. Besides his wife, he Is survived by his step-father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Knight of Grandville: a brother, Leon Palmer of Grand Rapids: three half-brothers. Pvt. Loren Knight, who is with the army in Australia, Leslie Knight of Grandville, and Lawrence Knight of Grand Rapids, and two half-sisters, Mrs. LaVerna Albright of Detroit and Miss Luella Knight of Grand Rapids.
