Charles M. Smith and family, originally from New York, moved to Wisconsin in the 1850s. Along with wife Mary Ann Webb Smith, Charles raised 8 children. Some time after wife Mary Ann died in 1886, Charles moved into the household of his daughter and son in law (Albert and Susan Rebecca Smith Waddell) in Diamond Township, Cherokee County, Iowa.
