Originally from New York, Charles Harvey Smith came to Wisconsin in the 1850s. He was the oldest of 8 children to Charles Melancthon and Mary Ann (Webb) Smith. During the Civil War, he served in Companies A & B of the 16th Wisconsin Infantry where he was wounded twice. In 1875, he married Lois Rosilla How(e) of Beloit, Wisconsin. Together, they had 10 or 11 children. Around 1885, Harvey and Lois Smith moved from Beaver Dam to Milwaukee and resided there until their deaths in 1916 and 1933, respectively. They were then buried in Beaver Dam Cemetery in Beaver Dam, Dodge, Wisconsin.
