Mary Harford was one of 12 children born to waggon maker Daniel and his wife Hannah Boyd. The family moved from Pennsylvania to Ohio where their first two sons were born. Then they returned to Pennsylvania where the couple raised their large family.

In the late 1860s the family moved to Ohio and Mary met the young Dr. Henry Miller who had recently graduated from the Homeopathic College of Medicine in Cleveland. They married in 1872 and had two daughters, Adele and Mabelle, before settling in Missouri where Dr. Miller had a successful practice.

Mary passed away in 1914 at age 71. Their daughters, both spinster teachers, continued to care for their widowed father.
