MRS. ERASTUS THOMPSON
Mrs. Erastus Thompson, a former resident of Chariton, died in Albia on the morning of October 24th, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Josephine McCahan, at the age of seventy-four years.
For several years she had been in failing health but her fatal illness began when she was away from home visiting friends. However, she was able to return to the home of her daughter in Albia, where she resigned herself to the will of her Heavenly Father and patiently awaited the end, which came peacefully.
During her illness she frequently expressed her abiding faith in God and her willingness to follow his guidance. Hers was a beautiful and unselfish life. She was quiet and unobtrusive in manner and during her residence of several years in this city she enjoyed the esteem and confidence of all with whom she became acquainted.
The remains were brought to Chariton for interment by the side of her husband who died in November, 1885. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. A. H. Collins, were held at the M. E. church on Saturday morning at 10:45 o'clock and were largely attended by her old neighbors and friends, who came with heavy hearts to pay the last tribute of respect to the memory of her who had been so greatly beloved.
Miss Mary A. Birkhead was born in Tyler county, West Virginia, Sept. 19, 1821. When about sixteen years of age she removed with her parents to Findlay, Ohio. At this place she was united in marriage to Erastus Thompson on Oct. 6, 1840. After a few years residence in Findlay they moved to Bluffton, Ohio, where they resided until 1864 when they went to Baraboo, Wisconsin, thence to Chariton, Iowa in 1867.
In her early years Mrs. Thompson was converted and for over fifty years had lived a consistent Christian life.
She was the mother of five children, three of whom, Rev. Wm. B. Thompson, pastor of the M. E. church at Carroll, Elmer E. Thompson, of Indianola, and Mrs. Josephine McCahan, of Albia, survive her and have the sympathy of many friends in their overwhelming sorrow.
