Mr. Thomas J. Prather died at 2 o'clock this morning at his home in East Roanoke. He had been in failing health for months. The interment will occur at 11 o'clock tomorrow at Macedonia Church in Chambers County. Mr. Prather moved to Roanoke from Chambers about two years ago. He was an excellent man and leaves a wife and several grown children, all of whom are held in esteem by all who know them, and in this hour of great loss have the sympathy of many friends. – Roanoke Leader.

In Memory of T. J. Prather.
After preaching by Elders Morgan and Welch, Brother Prather was quietly laid to rest in the Macedonia Cemetery last Thursday, Nov. 12th. He died at his lovely home in Roanoke, Ala., after much suffering from complicated diseases, which were not thought to be so serious until the present year. He has lately spent some time at Hot Springs, Ark., hoping to receive the benefit. Thus a good and noble-hearted man has passed away from our church and community, and the loss is keenly felt by quite a large circle of brethren, sisters and friends. He died in his fifty-sixth year, and had been a public spirited man and did all he could to build up public interest in various ways.
Brother Prather was known throughout the country as being honest and fair in all his dealings with his fellowmen. By his good judgment, industry and economy he had prospered above many of his equals and at the time of his death he doubtless "owed no man anything, but to love him." He joined the church of Christ (Primitive Baptist) at Macedonia more than thirty years ago, and was baptized by the late Elder A. B. Whatley. At the time of his death he was a member of the Mount Pisgah Church at Stroud, and attended the services there the first Sunday and Saturday, before in Oct., and which there was made perfectly happy and rejoiced in the hope of the glory of God. At the time he took occasion to express his love for the truth and for all the people of God and in turn the church confirmed her love for him by extending to him the hand of fellowship and the whole house was moved to tears of gladness, but at the same time made to feel sad to hear him say that he felt that the time of his departure was at hand, etc. So I can say the last time I saw him alive he was happy in the Lord, and in deep earnestness he, grasping my hand and looking me in the face, expressed in melting tones and low voice his fervent love for me. And I know I loved him, and regretted not seeing him in his last illness, but owing to his mental condition at that time, I was advised it might be best for him for me not to do so. Since his death I have been informed that when most conscious he expressed a longing to have me by him, which if I had known, nothing reasonable would have kept me from his bedside. He leaves a true help mate and most faithful companion, three noble sons and three beautiful and cultured daughters and an aged and loving mother, with many other relatives and friends to mourn this loss to us, but his gain, as we believe. His spirit has returned to God who gave it, and in the morning of the resurrection, it will be raised up and caught up to meet the Lord in the air and so shall he ever be with the Lord. I write this for my own satisfaction and for the love I have for him and his family, and it is not intended as an obituary. I suppose an obituary will be prepared in due time.

To them were born 7 children, 3 sons and 4 daughters (one daughter having died about 25 years ago). He leaves to mourn his death his wife and six children. Mrs. Odessa Higgins and Mr. Doc Prather, of near Five Points, Ala., Misses Maggie and Lara and Messrs. Henry and King Prather, his wife and aged mother, of Roanoke, Ala., one own sister, two half brothers, one half sister, all of Chambers County. His only own brother preceded him in death some years ago. Six grandchildren and other relatives all will miss him, but as life is uncertain, and death is sure, when the summons comes we must go and those that remain must bow in submission. Brother Prather was well known for here he lived among us and to know him was to love him. He was an honorable, obedient son, a kind, respectful, faithful husband, a tender, loving father, providing well for his own house and family, an honorable citizen, a noble and accommodating neighbor, always ready to assist and help the needy. His remains were carried to Macedonia the day following his death, where the writer and Elder C. W. Welch tried to say some words of comfort to the bereaved ones and to portray a tribute to him, after which he was laid to rest in the silent "City of the Dead". At the time he took occasion to express his love for the truth and for all the people of God and in turn the church confirmed her love for him by extending to him the hand of fellowship and the whole house was moved to tears of gladness, but at the same time made to feel sad to hear him say that he felt that the time of his departure was at hand, etc. So I can say the last time I saw him alive he was happy in the Lord, and in deep earnestness he, grasping my hand and looking me in the face, expressed in melting tones and low voice his fervent love for me. And I know I loved him, and regretted not seeing him in his last illness, but owing to his mental condition at that time, I was advised it might be best for him for me not to do so. Since his death I have been informed that when most conscious he expressed a longing to have me by him, which if I had known, nothing reasonable would have kept me from his bedside. He leaves a true help mate and most faithful companion, three noble sons and three beautiful and cultured daughters and an aged and loving mother, with many other relatives and friends to mourn this loss to us, but his gain, as we believe. His spirit has returned to God who gave it, and in the morning of the resurrection, it will be raised up and caught up to meet the Lord in the air and so shall he ever be with the Lord. I write this for my own satisfaction and for the love I have for him and his family, and it is not intended as an obituary. I suppose an obituary will be prepared in due time.

He was an honorable, obedient son, a kind, respectful, faithful husband, a tender, loving father, providing well for his own house and family, an honorable citizen, a noble and accommodating neighbor, always ready to assist and help the needy. His remains were carried to Macedonia the day following his death, where the writer and Elder C. W. Welch tried to say some words of comfort to the bereaved ones and to portray a tribute to him, after which he was laid to rest in the silent "City of the Dead". We weep with his family in their loss, but we weep in a strong hope that he shall live again and we all, with the blood washed throng shall be carried to that home above to die no more.
