Watauga Democrat Obituary:
Mr. James Alfonzo "Fonz" Hayes, 86, of 135 Hayes St., Boone, died Friday morning, Oct. 15, at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 3, 1907, in Boone, a son of the late George W. and Lou Ella Bumgarner Hayes. He was a retired self-employed stone mason and a member of Mount Lebanon Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Anna Louise Colvard Hayes of the home; three daughters, Anna Lee Summit and her husband, Bill, and Mary Lee Fletcher and her husband, Jim, all of Lexington, and Elizabeth Miller of Lenoir; three sons, Ken Hayes and his wife, Beulah, of Vilas, Bill Hayes and his wife, Carrie, of Monroe and Harold Hayes and his wife, Alta, of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; one brother, Robert Hayes of Boone. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, five sisters and a son-in-law, Mr. Brice Miller.
Services were Sunday afternoon at Mount Lebanon Baptist Church. Officiating were the Rev. Carl Wilson and the Rev. Steve Goss. Burial followed in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.
Hampton Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.
